🎵 “Copycat” – EOA Don’t Learn This the Hard Way (Billie Eilish)
Updated: Jul 12
(Reframed this from a support group poster who is a queen of information to us all)
I’m going to say this straight:
👉 Don’t wait.
👉 Don’t assume you have time.
👉 Don’t think this is “later.”
If you take nothing else from this post…
👉 Get your financial and legal house in order NOW.
🚨 If You Do NOTHING Else… Do This
Put a beneficiary on every financial account:
Checking
Savings
CDs
Life Insurance
Investment accounts
Why?
👉 Because they don’t need a will to access it
👉 They only need:
A death certificate
Their ID
That’s it.
Simple. Clean. Done.
📂 Make a MASTER LIST (This is huge)
If no one knows it exists…
They will never find it.
Create a list of:
Banks
Account numbers
Investment accounts
Credit cards
Utilities
Passwords
You can:
Write it by hand
Put it on a secure drive
Store it in a bank safe deposit box
👉 And make sure someone you trust knows where it is
🔐 Safe Deposit Box (Don’t forget this)
If you have one:
👉 Make sure a trusted person is a signer
Otherwise?
👉 They may not be able to access it when needed
🏡 TOD = Transfer on Death (For Your Home)
If you own a home—this is BIG.
👉 A TOD deed allows your home to transfer directly to your beneficiary
What that means:
No probate
No delays
No unnecessary legal costs
👉 Your heir just needs:
ID
Death certificate
And the home transfers.
📄 The Core Documents You NEED
These are not optional.
🧠 Living Will
Spells out:
👉 What you want medically if you cannot speak for yourself
⚖️ Durable Power of Attorney
👉 Allows someone to make legal/financial decisions for you
❤️ Healthcare Power of Attorney
👉 Allows someone to make medical decisions
📜 Last Will & Testament
Covers:
Personal belongings
Who manages your estate
⚠️ BUT:
👉 Beneficiaries on accounts override your will
⚰️ Funeral Planning Declaration
👉 Your wishes for services and arrangements
💥 What Happens If You DON’T Do This
Let me be very clear:
👉 It becomes a nightmare.
You must open an estate account
You need an attorney
Notices may be published publicly
Anyone can make claims
Everything takes longer
Everything costs more
👉 It is stressful, expensive, and avoidable
🧾 Don’t Forget These Details
Where life insurance policies are
Titles for vehicles, campers, etc.
Instructions for paying bills
👉 Make it easy for the people you love
🔑 Digital Life (This matters more than you think)
Make sure someone knows:
Apple ID
Bank logins
Password access
👉 And consider removing phone lock issues that could block access
👨👩👧 Trusts (When Needed)
If you have:
Young children
Complex assets
👉 Set up a trust and appoint a trustee. We did a revocable living trust, and lady bird deeded our home to the "trust", made a "trust" bank account, and made the "Trust" the beneficiaries of all of our assets POD.
💬 The MOST IMPORTANT PART
Talk.
👉 Talk to the people you choose👉 Talk to the people you don’t choose
Explain:
Your decisions
Your wishes
Your reasoning
Because silence?
👉 Creates confusion
👉 Creates conflict
👉 Creates hurt feelings later
💡 Final Thought
This isn’t about money.
It’s about:
👉 Making things easier for the people you love
👉 Removing stress during an already devastating time
👉 Leaving clarity instead of chaos
🎵 One More Thing…
“Don’t be cautious, don’t be kind…”
Okay… maybe don’t follow that part 😄
But do this instead:
👉 Take action
👉 Start the conversation
👉 Get it done
💛 My Hope
That this helps you:
👉 Start
👉 Organize
👉 Protect
And maybe…
👉 Encourage someone else to do the same
