🎵 “Denial Is a River” – EOA When They Don’t See It (Doechii)
Updated: Jul 12
Let’s talk about this one…
Because if you’re here, you’ve heard it:
👉 “There’s nothing wrong with me.”
👉 “I don’t need you to do that.”
👉 “I can manage this myself.”
👉 “I can drive just fine.”
👉 “It’s you… I’m fine.”
And you’re standing there thinking:
👉 “Are we living in the same reality?”
🧠 What This Actually Is: Agnosia
Let’s put a name to it.
👉 Agnosia (specifically anosognosia)
This is:
👉 A lack of awareness of deficits
Meaning:
👉 They truly do not recognize something is wrong
⚠️ Read That Again
This is not:
❌ Denial in the normal sense
❌ Being stubborn
❌ Being difficult
This is:
👉 The brain not registering the problem
🧠 Why This Happens
Alzheimer’s affects parts of the brain responsible for:
Insight
Self-awareness
Judgment
So what happens?
👉 Their brain literally cannot process:
“I am having trouble.”
💥 What It Looks Like in Real Life
Insisting they can drive
Refusing help
Arguing about obvious issues
Blaming YOU
👉 “You’re the one forgetting things”
👉 “You’re overreacting”
😡 Why This Is So HARD
Because YOU:
See everything clearly
Are trying to protect them
Are trying to help
And THEY:
👉 Think you’re controlling, wrong, or overstepping
🧠 The Truth You Need to Accept
You cannot:
❌ Convince them
❌ Logic them into awareness
❌ “Prove” it to them
Because the issue is not belief…
👉 It’s brain function
💡 So What DO You Do?
This is where the shift happens.
✔️ Stop Arguing Facts
❌ “You can’t drive”
✔️ “Let’s go together—it’ll be easier”
✔️ Redirect, Don’t Confront
❌ “You already messed that up”✔️ “I’ve got it—why don’t you help me with this instead”
✔️ Use Safety Framing
Instead of:
👉 “You can’t do this”
Say:
👉 “I just want to make sure everything goes smoothly”
✔️ Pick Your Battles
Everything doesn’t need to be corrected.
👉 Save your energy for:
Safety
Health
Major decisions
🚗 Real Talk: Driving
This is where it gets serious.
They may say:
👉 “I can drive fine”
But:
👉 Judgment is impaired
👉 Reaction time is slower
👉 Awareness is off
And the scariest part?
👉 They don’t know it
💔 The Emotional Toll (On YOU)
This part will:
Frustrate you
Exhaust you
Make you question yourself
👉 That’s normal
💡 What Helped Me
Stop trying to convince
Start managing the environment
Accept that insight may not come back
👉 That shift changes everything
🎵 Why This Song Fits
“Denial is a river…”
Except this isn’t just denial.
👉 It’s neurological
And once you understand that…
👉 You stop taking it personally
💛 Final Thought
They’re not choosing this.
👉 Their brain is.
And your role changes from:
👉 “Trying to convince them”
To:
👉 “Keeping them safe anyway”
